DO EV CAR BATTERIES DEGRADE WHILE RAPID CHARGING?

As rapid charging bays account for 20% of total devices, here we look at why concerns over their effect on battery life are now a myth. As the name suggests, rapid charging is a faster way to charge an electric vehicle battery, up to 80% charge in 20 to 40 minutes - or between 7kW to 22kW - and add up to 200 miles of range.

Some people assume that rapid charging your electric vehicle can degrade your EV battery but that is largely a misconception. To minimise battery degradation, EV batteries are designed with fast-charging technology.

Also, most modern EVs come equipped with battery management systems that control the charging process, allowing for the correct amount of power to enter the battery, even while rapid charging. So, EV owners no longer need to worry about how this will affect their EV battery lifespan.

Battery types like 4C batteries have supercharging capabilities and achieve a range of 280km. The recent innovations in EV batteries can effectively minimise rapid charging. At most, rapid charging will only slightly increase the EV battery degradation but does not have a significant impact on battery health.

EV drivers should feel confident that they can fast charge, knowing the batteries are designed to maintain battery health. Make sure to follow the best battery care practices to minimise any potential damage while charging.

Tips to charge your EV without degrading the battery

1. Don't charge your EV to the max: Your electric vehicle's lithium-ion batteries only need to be charged up to 80% and many EVs will let you set a specific target for charging your battery. Only consider charging your EV to 100% if you are taking a long trip. If unsure of the target ch...
