Different Types of Plate
There are different types of personalised number plates available in the UK currently, and they are outlined below:
Current
The 'current' style of plate is the style used for new car registrations today. This layout has been around since 2001 and comprises seven characters, made up of two letters indicating the region the car was registered. This is followed by two numbers indicating the vehicle's age and finishing with three random letters.
Prefix
Used in the UK between 1983 and 2001, the prefix number plate is so called as the first letter indicates the vehicle's age. For example, a prefix plate that begins with a 'H' was registered in the year 1990.
Suffix
The opposite of the 'prefix' plate, the 'suffix', was issued in the UK between 1963 and 1983. They start with the letter 'A' and end with a letter that indicates their age. If the plate ends in 'C', for example, you'll know it's a 1965 vehicle.
