1. Evidence - If you think you have hit a pothole, as soon as it is safe to do so pull over! Check for any noticeable damages on the bodywork and tyres - sometimes the damage is not always clear. Make a note of exactly where the pothole was and take photographic evidence of the pothole, it's measure, depth and width. Also any damage it has caused to your vehicle. It is also worth noting down the time and date of the incident.

2. Reporting it - Report the pothole to the local council or road authority, even if you don't claim through them, be kind and save someone else the same hassle. It also helps your next step. The council and highways authorities are responsible for different types of roads. For example, local councils in England, Wales, and Scotland, maintain local roads, B roads, and some smaller A roads. So knowing who you need to make your claim to is essential!
