1. Choose Your Ride Carefully
Choosing a motorcycle is a great experience, but it can be tempting to go for the biggest bike available for your budget. Make sure you're thinking carefully about what you can handle. Choose a model that has ABS brakes and that fits your height. Your feet should be able to rest flat on the ground and the handlebars and controls should be within easy reach. If it feels too heavy it probably is!
2. Dress Appropriately
Appropriate clothing is also important. While it is not a legal requirement to wear a protective suit, doing so reduces impact and helps to protect against injuries. If you'd prefer all-weather protection, man-made materials are best, whereas leather gear suits those who prioritise greater overall protection and wind resistance.
Keep your helmet in tip-top condition, which means replacing it every five to seven years. The impact foam inside wears down over time, making it less effective at preventing head injuries. And resist the temptation to buy second hand kit! If you don't know it's history, don't risk it.
