Our History

Car & Driving was founded and established by national motoring journalist Jonathan Crouch, one of the most prolific writers in the industry.

Car and Driving was established in the early 1980s with a vision to create a world-leading resource of motoring editorial content. Content requires credibility, so we started serving the UK regional newspaper industry with motoring content.

By the early 1990s we had become the UK's No.1 motoring media agency, serving newspapers from virtually every regional publisher in the UK.

In the early 2000s we began to work with a number of large motoring organisations such as the Civil Service Motoring Association, Newsquest Media Group, Johnston Press, CarSource, Archant, Exchange & Mart, Autotrader, Dunlop Tyres, Northcliffe Newspapers, RAC, Teletext, Kelkoo and Yahoo.

We were also awarded major dealer training contracts with Toyota, Lexus, Citroen and Jaguar.

GM Daewoo, Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota, Vauxhall and Honda soon appointed us as an editorial resource for their UK dealers to use in local press, in-showroom and on their websites.

In 2007 we started to develop a new side to Car & Driving's business - that of producing industry-leading Road Test Videos that would link into all forms of the company's existing editorial and picture content.

By 2009 we were ready to take our video resource to a new market - car dealer groups. Marshall Motor Group was the first to sign up to our video feed - and was rewarded for its vision by winning the Motor Trader website of the year award. Other major groups quickly followed - Ridgeway, John Martin Group, Listers, Pentagon, WJ King, Inchcape, Essex Auto Group, Arnold Clark, Ford Online and whole string of others.

In 2016 we launched AutoExpert, the world’s most sophisticated car-research system and we entered the bespoke filming market.

In 2017/2018 we pioneered the concept of Pre-Delivery video, films that properly guide customers through their new models just prior to delivery. Throughout this time, our video library has continued to grow and by 2018, it had reached nearly 1,200 films, vastly more than any competitor. All of this backed by the industry’s largest new and used car editorial resource.

Today, Car & Driving continues to set standards that others follow.
